This subject comprises of the bodies of knowledge grouped under Civic Education (CE), Social Studies (SS) and Security Education (SE). Civic Education has as objective to convince the students that living a life of virtue is more fulfilling than a life of vice. This life of virtue serves as guarantee for good governance, the rule of law and the respect for human dignity and rights. In CE, we prepare the students to be leaders in the community. The curriculum published by Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the uniform scheme of work offered by the Enugu State Ministry of Education are used to convince the students that a good leader is synonymous with a virtuous person. In SS and SE, the curriculums and schemes still focus on virtues, both emphasizing the social ones. A civilized society is only possible if majority of the citizens practice the social virtues.
The students are helped to arrive at the conviction that, it is more human to be the only one practicing a social virtue than to join everyone to practice the contrary vice and that, security becomes a societal challenge when the practice of social virtues diminishes. In the argumentation for the importance of practicing the virtues be it personal (CE) or social (SS & SE), using the topics enumerated in the curriculum, only the philosophical principles of knowledge such as the principle of non-contradiction are used as starting point i.e. the students are stimulated to arrive at the truth of the assertion “the life of virtue both at personal and societal level is the best” through their powers of reason alone. Having gone through these session of logic and, become convinced that virtue is the best, the least expected of them is an A grade in both the National Examination Council (NECO) and Enugu State Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
